A New Chapter for West Matheson Hammock Park: What's Changing?
One of Miami's treasured green spaces is getting a makeover, with exciting plans to restore its natural beauty and protect its unique ecosystem for generations to come.
Nestled near Pinecrest and Coral Gables, West Matheson Hammock Park has long been a beloved destination for nature lovers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts. Now, this historic park is undergoing a significant restoration project designed to preserve its ecological importance while enhancing the natural environment.
A Piece of Miami History
Did you know that Matheson Hammock holds a special place in Miami-Dade County's history?
Recognized as the County's first park and one of its heritage parks, West Matheson Hammock has played an important role in environmental conservation for decades.
Originally used as a county tree farm, the park was recognized as an environmentally sensitive habitat in the 1980s. Today, much of its land is protected through Miami-Dade County's Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program.
The goal of the restoration is to return the park to its original purpose: a thriving natural preserve that protects native wildlife and vegetation.
What's Changing at West Matheson Hammock Park?
Miami-Dade County is partnering with Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden to bring several long-planned environmental improvements to life.
The restoration project includes:
🌳 More Tree Canopy: Removing invasive vegetation and establishing tree cover in recreational areas.
🐦 Wildlife Habitat Restoration: Recreating natural habitats for wading birds and introducing designated viewing points.
🌿 Forest Preservation: Removing invasive vines that have damaged portions of the park's forest.
💧 Snapper Creek Improvements: Restoring vegetation and irrigation in portions of the creek's habitat.
🌱 Historic Nursery Restoration: Rebuilding the park's original nursery space to honor its conservation history.
Together, these improvements aim to create a healthier, more resilient natural environment while preserving the park's character.
When Will the Park Reopen?
West Matheson Hammock Park temporarily closed to the public on February 17, 2026, to allow restoration work to move forward.
According to Miami-Dade County, the project is expected to be completed by fall 2026, although an exact reopening date has not yet been announced.
Residents are encouraged to follow the County's official updates for the latest information.
Why This Matters to Our Community
For those who call Pinecrest, Coral Gables, and the surrounding neighborhoods home, access to beautiful outdoor spaces is one of the many things that makes living in South Florida so special.
Parks like West Matheson Hammock offer more than just recreational opportunities. They help preserve our local ecosystems, provide important wildlife habitats, and contribute to the natural beauty that defines our communities.
As Miami continues to grow, protecting these green spaces is essential to maintaining the balance between development and nature.
Looking Ahead
The restoration of West Matheson Hammock Park represents an investment in Miami's environmental future.
With improved habitats, healthier forests, and renewed conservation areas, the park is being prepared for generations of residents to appreciate and enjoy.
